Being unable to work because of a serious medical condition can seem especially cruel; not only are you sick and suffering, but you are also likely in some financial difficulties because of being out of work. The normal approval process for Social Security disability can take many long months, but if your medical conditions falls into one of the below categories, you can expect to get a much quicker approval. To learn more about these programs, read on.
Compassionate Allowance
The Social Security Administration (SSA) maintains a special list of medical conditions, called the compassionate allowance list, that could help your claim go through faster. The list includes many different types of medical disorders from cancer to Parkinson's Disease. In most cases, you must supply a large volume of medical proof of your condition, but if your illness is on the compassionate allowance list, the heavy medical proof burden is lessened quite a bit. You should understand that in all cases the mandatory 5-month waiting period still stands.
Quick Disability Determination (QDD)
The SSA maintains quite a lot of data on medical conditions, and it is this data that is used to make a quicker determination of an application. Certain medical conditions that get a higher rate of approval are flagged and assigned a point system based on past approvals. Since these claims do not need to be reviewed further by a medical consultant, you can expect a much quicker processing of your application if your condition qualifies.
Terminal Illnesses (TERI)
Diseases that have been shown to have a high probability of eventually leading to death allow those sufferers to land on the terminal illness list (TERI). This program can be extremely useful not only for the fast approval of benefits for the sufferer, but also for those who are caring for the terminal patient since it paves the way for end of life needs such as hospice care.
Other Information
The claim approval process for these special programs may be faster, but you must still provide the needed medical proof and go through the 5-month waiting period. It should also be noted that though these programs are utilized to speed along the approval process, the claimants themselves may not be aware that their claim was processed under the program. There may be no indication on any correspondence about any of these programs, particularly the TERI program.
